about us

Food for all comprises of a group of dedicated volunteers who have been working with disadvantaged people since 1980.

Healthy meals are distributed to 500 people daily. The project is geared towards the homeless, drug abusers,single parents, unemployed, as well as people who are generally marginalised.

Free meals are distributed by rickshaw and van in the Camden area. Meals are also available at the Camden resource centre, which opens from 8am to 4pm.

Exerpts from letters, from some of our customers;

'Since the centre opened I have witnessed first hand the care, love, charity, support and guidance that you, Dene, Peter and the other staff offer to all of the local community. This is in addition to the free food, drink, Internet access, music classes, yoga classes, meditation, healing workshops and other activities and guidance that you offer. These are the pursuits and activities that our community is desperately in need of. I have also spoken to some of the other people who use the centre and for the less fortunate members of our community the centre is a life line, a haven where they can get a hot meal, a warm drink and help to start getting their lives back in order. I use the centre myself and also offer whatever help I can to Dene and Peter. I offer this help because of the goodness and godliness that the Centre has brought into my life and into our local community'.

'I don't get money from social security and there is no where I can get food from. I completely rely on the centre for my food and if it wasn't here I would probably die. This is one place where I am treated like a human being and it's a place I can talk to people and meet friends. I have met some of nicest people I have ever met at the centre'.

'I have been coming to the Hare Krishna cafe since it opened a couple of months ago and I personally find it a great help to me and all others who come here.If it were not here I would be begging money from cash points and shop lifting to earn money for food'.

'I have been an alcoholic for some time and since the cafe has opened I have been able to come here without being drunk and help with my stopping the consumption of alcohol by the fact that you very kindly let me help out a little to fill my time in a positive way.

My drinking was very negative and self-destructive and I don't know what I will do to keep my time positive. The centre has also helped my spiritual advancement and also helped me to relax with yoga classes and the singing to the lord. Plus I shall miss the other people who use the cafe. They were very friendly and non-aggressive. All I can say is that it was a great spiritual refuge'.

'I have been a Camden resident for most of the past decade and as the mother of a young child and without a job, I have often felt isolated. The "food for all" shop, which I discovered a month ago has, in the amazingly short amount of time literally changed my day to day life. As I am often short of money it is somewhere to eat healthily and for free. It is somewhere for me to come each morning and some evenings to partake in an hour and a half meeting involving meditation, music and discussions which has helped me tremendously with beating depression. It is somewhere I attend free yoga classes and am learning to play percussions, but it is also somewhere I am made to feel welcome and useful as I can sometimes help out'.

'If this centre is closed down I will no longer be able to be a vender of the Big Issue, which will close down my only income, leaving me no choice but to have the humiliation of begging for my food. If you were to take the time to research these organisations you would see that the centre as well as the Big Issue foundation offers a great deal of support services. It is not just a "Free Food For Dossers" hang out. Creative writing workshops, yoga and relaxation, having help and advice and referrals to specialist services are but a few of the helpful things on offer here'.

How you can help;

We are always in need of volunteer drivers, and volunteers to help in serving meals on the van, helping in the centre, etc, etc,

We can always make use of offers from food retail outlets, that might have food close to its sell by date.
