.. New Zealand - September 2008

"Do they eat Dogs?"

Friday, 14 April 1972

“New Zealand, consisting of two large islands, lay 2,500km south-east of Australia in the South Pacific Ocean. The first inhabitants to arrive from Polynesia had called their new home Aotearoa, "the land of the long white cloud".

Today, its mild, pleasant climate and ample, lush pasture lands yielded cheap and bounteous dairy products, especially milk, cream and world-class butter. Auckland, situated on the upper part of the North Island, was the largest urban centre in New Zealand, supporting a population of a little less than 700,000.

As the car drove through the quiet, green suburbs, Prabhupada asked about the New Zealand people.

"Do they eat dogs?"

Jagattarini remembered Prabhupada asking the same question on his first arrival in Hong Kong. There, she had answered:"Yes, these people eat dogs", and Prabhupada could immediately judge the standard of the local population.

"No, Srila Prabhupada," replied Tusta Krsna. "They don't eat dogs."

Prabhupada smiled broadly. "Oh, that's very nice."

"And also, Srila Prabhupada," Tusta added from the driver's seat, "there are no snakes in New Zealand."

Prabhupada seemed very impressed. "Oh, that's also very nice." Srila Prabhupada continued to show an active interest for the remainder of the trip, with Tusta Krsna, as far as possible, answering his enquiries.”

World Holy Name Week

We spent a part of the “World Holy Name” week in Auckland, now a city of 1.2 million, but had to leave quickly for the installation in Malaysia. As always we had some great Harinama. The first day there were only 3 of us but it didn’t deter the reciprocation from the public. We could go to places that a big party may find difficulty and met people who are off our normal beaten track. What counts is our enthusiasm and consciousness. If we are positive, happy and internally communicative with the public they reciprocate. If we think they are karmis, don’t like us, what are we doing here, etc. then naturally the response will be more negative. Whether two or two hundred devotes if our attitude is favourable then the result will be favourable.

The next day we went to some different places – 4 of us. New Zealand is quiet but despite the sparse streets the result was again wonderful. In the evening –Friday- many devotees came. We split into two parties as the authorities had been giving the sankirtan devotees a bit of a hard time. Powerful kirtan parties created quite an impact on the public.

The next day we had a big party of around 30 devotees and again went to a few areas of the city. In many places we had spontaneous participation from the people.

After hours of kirtan we feel so purified and happy.

Our Life and Soul

“So far Sankirtana is concerned, I am so much pleased to learn that you are taking Sankirtana as your life and soul. There is no doubt about Krsna's being pleased very much upon those who are engaged in such Sankirtana Movement, that is admitted by Lord Krsna in the Bhagavad-gita and Caitanya Caritamrta.”
Letter to: Hamsaduta -- Los Angeles 1 April, 1970

“In addition to this everyone should go on the streets with Sankirtana Party as much as possible and preach this Krishna Consciousness Movement to his best ability for the benefit of all people.
Please continue your efforts in Krishna Consciousness with great determination……. We must always remember that chanting of Hare Krishna Mahamantra is our life and soul.

Letter to: Madhusudana -- Los Angeles 30 January, 1970

Yes, get nama Sankirtana organized, it is very nice program. It is all encouraging. Nityananda Prabhu was doing this although He was attacked by Jagai and Madhai. In spite of His being injured by them, Lord Nityananda delivered these two brothers. That is the way of preaching. Certainly there will be thousands to follow a large Sankirtana Party, so you do like that.
Letter to: Jayapataka -- Los Angeles 10 July, 1970

“We are not sentimentalists that we are simply dancing. The dancing has got great value; that, if you dance with us, you'll feel. It is not that some crazy fellows are dancing. No. The most intelligent persons, they are dancing. It is so nicely made that even a boy like here, he is a boy, he can take part. Universal. Join, chant Hare Krsna and dance, and you'll realize. Very simple method. You haven't got to understand any high standard of philosophy or jugglery of words, this or that. Simple thing. What is simple thing? God is great, everyone knows, and we are part and parcel of the great.
