The recent foot and mouth outbreak in the UK, which is resulting in the slaughter of thousands of sheep, oxen and pigs, has caused temple authorities at Bhaktivedanta Manor to put in place several precautionary measures to avoid spread of the disease.

Janmastami 2001 will be taking place as normal

All vehicles entering the Manor's grounds must drive through a disinfectant straw mat.

The fields and Goshal areas are cordorned off to all except devotees working with the land and animals. These devotees are washing their wellies in disinfesctant.

All school visits to the Goshalla and mass festivals are cancelled until further notice, although the Manor is open as usual for darshan and normal programmes.

If the disease reaches Hertsfordshire, Temple president Vipramukya Swami has warned that the Manor could close completely in order to quarantine and protect its animals, particularly the herd of around thirty oxen.
