House of Fraser Apology and Damages

In an out-of court settlement of the House of Fraser against International Society for Krishna Consciousness, United Kingdom (ISKCON UK), libel case, House of Fraser today apologised and agreed to pay £25,000 damages.

from the Daily mail, page 10

In March last year we published in two magazines and on 2.2-meter posters in our store windows an advertisement for our Linea Directions range featuring devotees of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), a branch of ancient Hindu religion, parading in the street.

The advertisement might have been understood as suggesting that ISKCON was a loony religious sect which brainwashed its followers and further, that one of the devotees photographed, Mr. Dhananjaya Das, was an easily-led nutcase who had been brainwashed by ISKCON.

We wood like to take this opportunity to apologise for any suggestions, which were not intended, and which we accept are wholly untrue. We received a number of complaints about the advertisement.

Although the advertisement was not attended to be taken in any way seriously, we accept that contrary to our intentions it did cause grave offence.

We should therefore like to make clear that we fully accept that ISKCON is an internationally respected and renowned religious movement with numerous centres around the world. We apologise to ISKCON, Mr. Das and the followers of ISKCON for the advertisement.
