Bhaktivedanta Manor enhances Green Belt

Hertsmere, planting a tree

Bhaktivedanta Manor, Hare Krishna Temple and ISKCON UK Headquarters, is planting more than 6000 trees and shrubs around its extensive estate in the heart of the Green Belt. One of the aims of the project is to establish a living parameter and stockproof fence around the pasturing fields.

"The Manor has come to recognise its strategic relevance to the Green Belt area in which it has been functioning as a temple for more than 30 years. We would like to enhance and contribute towards the visible environmental beauty of the area." says Gauri dasa, Temple President.

Bhaktivedanta Manor will increase its aesthetic appearance greatly by this innovative project:

  • It will create hedgerow fields and establish interspersed large parkland trees, whilst strengthening the living screens and boundaries to the property
  • It will create a more interesting visit to the estate.
  • At various periods during the year there will be walls of blooms from the hedge plants.

The project will also add to the ecological sensitivities of the estate where devotees try to live as self-sufficiently as possible. The area set aside for this project will include wildlife corridors and living field boundaries to enhance current hedges.

The hedgerows and trees will provide added security and benefit to the wildlife in the area as well as creating spaces for the nesting birds. Eventually the hedges will establish a living barrier for the grazing cows and oxen. This will not only keep the animals better managed but the hedges will give a further dimension to grazing and added shelter from rain and sun.

The selection of trees and shrubs to be planted include quickthorn, blackthorn, wild cherry, hazel, holy, dogwood, honeysuckle, wild plum, dog rose and beech.

Mr. James Clappison MP (Hertsmere) along with the Mayor of Hertsmere, Cllr. Eddie Roach, were special guests of honour at the project's inaugoration on Sunday, 29th February 2004.
